Christa’s book delves into western medicinal herbs to a depth you won’t find in other herb books. What others hint at in just a paragraph or two, she fleshes out over several pages for each plant. It’s beautifully laid out with full-color photographs, medicinal uses and actions, botanical description, constituents, history, energetics, annotated sources, safety, preparation, and dose – all of which help you gain an intimate understanding of each plant and its nuances. It’s packed with information yet easy to read and understand. The Essential Guide to Western Botanical Medicine is destined to become a classic herbal medicine text for all levels of experience and one of my top-recommended herbals.

This is a beautifully done informative masterpiece. The best materia medica I have seen up to this point. There are several pages for each herb with beautiful pictures, very thorough information. I am thrilled to have this valuable info in my library and see myself using it for decades to come. The best addition to my herbal library. It truly is an excellent reference book.

WOW ~ WOW ~ WOW!! This is an AMAZING, GORGEOUS resource…so worth the money. I’m a new student to herbalism and have been using a dozen herbal books for the past few months. THIS one blows them all away in presentation, organization and data.
Thank you, Christa, for your huge contribution to the field.

The book is magnificent – a real work of art, as well as a comprehensive textbook. The photography is highly sensitive to the nuances and essence of each plant – it’s a bit like sitting with the herb itself! The love that has gone into this celebration of the herbs is obvious. This book will be a fantastic accompaniment to my online learning. Thank you Christa!

This is THE herbal book for our generation, whether student or professional. Grieve’s Modern Herbal was that book for my generation in the 1970s, You could go to an herb new or old to you and read comprehensive information from folk uses to those official in the Pharmacopoeias of the UK and the US. We really have not had that kind of book since, one which has long monographs on many herbs. Appropriate for our generation, this book also has energetics, combinations, and formulas. The student who purchases this book for their first reference book will find it useful at every subsequent level of study, all the way up to professional practice. It is an investment for a career. I am now in my 50th year of practice, and I keep this book on my bedtime reading table, to review or learn something new about whatever herbs are bubbling up in my mind that evening. It is really seven books in one, a book of folk and ethnobotanical uses, a book on historical and current clinical uses, a book on the energetics of Western Herbs, a book on Therapeutics by system, a Formulary, a book on safety, side effects and contraindications, a book on medicine making, and each of these at a high level of excellence, and impeccably referenced. If you buy this book, you are actually buying an herbal library in one.

I love this book! It was recommended by Herb Rally and because of the price it took me a while to decide to buy it but I’m really glad I did. It is a gorgeous book with so many beautiful plant pictures and it is incredibly comprehensive. I can’t even imagine how long it took to write, many years I’m sure. Lots of research for each herb, and everything else you can imagine. I never knew who Christa Sanadinos was before I decided to buy the book so this is just an honest review of someone who took a chance with her book. I do believe it is worth the cost. It’s a perfect reference book. I obviously highly recommend it.

What a masterpiece! As a student of herbalism, this book has been an invaluable resource. Christa goes into great detail- all the way from lore and tradition to constituents and modern research. This is one I’ll use for years to come. Thank you Christa!

I am just blown away with the quality and depth of this book. It’s really the ULTIMATE resource (over 750 pages!) and I have many books on herbal medicine. Here, every page is a feast for the eyes–instead of typical generic stock photos, you’ll find photos that are chosen with much intention and eye for detail, making them that much more useful (not to mention, beautiful). Normally, I’m used to jumping around between multiple books/websites when searching for a specific plant monograph (including contraindications, preparation and dosing); this book is my new go-to, since it covers it all in such detail. And just wait till you see the appendices and indexes! A GOLD MINE of useful information that makes this info nerd very happy. Highly recommended!!

I was gifted this book as a Mother’s Day present. I cried, I literally cried. I knew I wanted this book and never imagined my partner would get it as such a heart felt gift. Now, away from my personal mushy story, this book is absolutely incredible. Such high quality, well referenced information, and it’s now one of my primary books that I use, and I’m an herb book collecting (using too) addict. My binding has come apart a bit, but the book is so good, I will be purchasing another, just so I can make sure I always have it readily accessible. From the in depth monographs, history, plant identification, formulations, and soooo much more. This book is worth 1000x it’s weight in gold! Christa, thank you so much for the incredible work you do and dedicating your life to the world of plant medicine and healing people. You’re brilliant!

Your book (or The Essential Guide to Botanical Medicine) is so fantastic, hands-down the very best herbalism book I’ve come across. Everyone that I show it to wants to buy it. They are blown away by the detail, the imagery, and the incredible amount of educational material; I keep directing them your way!

I have known Christa Sinadinos and followed her career for over 25 years. This book is such an impressive representation of her life’s work. It’s an incredibly valuable resource for skilled herbalists as well as a novice like me. It’s also packed with stunning photographs and beautifully put together. I would definitely recommend investing in “The Essential Guide to Western Botanical Medicine.”

Christa’s book is as visually breathtaking as it is informative and delightfully organized! I’m loving her added perspective in my research and am happy to add “The Essential Guide to Western Botanical Medicine” to our school’s recommended reading list.

This book is an invaluable resource. I refer to it so frequently that I don’t even bother to put it back on my bookshelf anymore. The alphabetical organization makes it simple to flip through to find just what I’m looking for. The appendices in the back are so helpful when I’m working on formulations. I can quickly search the lists for herbs I already have in my apothecary to make an effective remedy quickly when needed. The photographs are so beautiful and as a plant lover I find them so pleasing! I especially love the ethnobotanical information, as I find the historical knowledge helps me connect on a deeper level with the plants. Thank you Christa for your robust investigative work to create this comprehensive resource!

Christa’s beautifully designed, well-researched and precisely written text book is THE definitive Materia Medica for Western Botanical Medicine as it stands in the 2020’s. This outright tome, this gorgeous opus, is extremely well put together, with beautiful photos and perfectly laid-out, easy-to-read and-understand text, and is highly useful for advanced medical practitioners, clinical herbalists in practice, beginning herb students and village lay herbalists alike. I highly recommend it. This is a high-value, long-lasting book to give prominence on your bookshelves for decades if not millennia.

This book has become the most referenced book in my library. I appreciate how each herb is thoroughly presented, including traditional uses, the latest scientific research, and Christa’s extensive clinical experience working with the herb. The photos are gorgeous, making this the first book I turn to when I have a question and when I want to get lost in the world of herbs.

The Materia Medica is the most compressive I’ve seen in a modern botanical medicine book. The layout throughout the book is excellent. The photographs are clear and crisp. This book should be kept at hand by students and practitioners alike.
